Sustainability Award for Multispectral Imaging Group of the LMS
The project of the Multispectral Imaging Group, consisting of Katja Kossira, Frank Sippel and PD Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Seiler, has won the Sustainability Award of the FAU in the category RESEARCH.
The project aims to increase the raw material recycling rate and promote the reuse of plastics, which can significantly reduce the CO2 emissions caused by the incineration and new production of plastics. The plastics industry is responsible for 4.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with the production of one ton of plastic generating almost two tons of CO2. With plastic production predicted to increase by 100% by 2050, the sustainable use of raw materials is crucial. The Multispectral Imaging Group aims to increase the recycling rate by at least 35%, which could result in a saving of 2.7 million tons of CO2 in Germany. The developed system with 10 cameras and filters offers a cost-efficient solution that can be integrated into sorting systems without the need to reconstruct existing systems.
Winning the award recognizes the project’s commitment to the efficient recycling of plastics and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and is a well-deserved success in the RESEARCH category. Further information on the award-winning research work can be found here.
